The story of CVU's first student-run newspaper

Hawks Nest Team

Introducing The Hawks' Nest, CVU's first student-run newspaper! The newspaper is led by four juniors: Grace Warrington '26, Lily Gruber '26, Karmen Wilbur '26, and Mikaela Montoya '26.

The idea began in 2022 when the editorial staff proposed the idea to faculty and administration. Grace Warrington, Editor-in-Chief, Lily, Managing Editor and Karmen, Managing Editor worked over the summer to formalize a plan and launched in the 2024/2025 school year. This culminated in the very newspaper you're reading right now!

After a year in actual production and identifying areas that could use more attention with our operations, we brought on Mikaela Montoya as our Business Manager. With her business savvy mindset our team is solidifying processes, sponsorship, and pass down for the next CVU Hawks' Nest leadership.

Our Mission

We feel it is important for a high school to have a school newspaper because it is an excellent way to build a community and hear everyone's voices and diverse opinions, along with giving students a chance to practice their journalistic skills. Not only that, but it allows the high school to participate in and support locally run news. We hope that this newspaper can become an outlet for everyone to engage in and be representative of the voice of our student body.

How We Operate

The newspaper is being run through a C3 time (every Tuesday in the Main Office Classroom) along with an after-school contingent. All students are welcomed to participate. The initial issues may be varied in monthly distribution, but we will be settled into a monthly schedule by winter.

The Hawks' Nest follows in the footsteps of many previous CVU newspapers before it, and it is my wish that the legacy of The Hawks' Nest can continue after its founders graduate. I hope that the paper will be picked up by a new generation of newspaper writers, editors, and photographers who are just as enthusiastic about it as we are.

"It's a civic necessity. It's integral to the functioning of any democratic institution, including and especially public schools. I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not, but the state of Vermont has even passed laws protecting the sanctity of student journalists in secondary schools. That makes it very difficult for administrations to suppress student speech. There's a reason Jefferson referred to the press as the fourth pillar of American Democracy."
